African start-ups and developers are building AI for credit, health, agriculture, education, logistics and government, often for users and in languages the big global labs overlook. Building responsibly isn’t a brake on that work. It’s how products earn trust from users, enterprise customers, regulators and investors, and how they avoid costly failures. This hands-on course shows builders how to design, test, document, ship and monitor AI products responsibly, with practical tools that fit small teams.
Who it’s for
Founders, product managers, data scientists, machine learning and software engineers, designers and technical leads at start-ups, scale-ups, tech hubs and corporate innovation teams, as well as accelerator mentors and investors who want to assess AI products. Some technical familiarity helps, but each concept is explained, and code examples are short and optional.
What you’ll be able to do
- Frame AI use cases and triage their risk early.
- Source, label and document data responsibly, including local-language data.
- Run practical fairness tests and choose sensible thresholds.
- Build privacy and security into AI products, including LLM applications.
- Evaluate and red-team models and generative AI apps.
- Write model cards, system documentation and user-facing transparency.
- Meet regulatory, enterprise and investor expectations across African markets and abroad.
- Monitor products in production and respond to incidents.
How it works
Ten modules, about 35 hours, with short lessons, labs and practice activities built around fictional African products. Assessment includes module quizzes, three practical assignments marked against a rubric, a final exam, and a capstone in which you produce a responsible AI governance pack for a product.
Certificate
Complete every step to earn the Certificate in Responsible AI for Builders, with a digital badge showing your capstone result.
Certificate and badge
