Across Africa, students are using generative AI for homework, universities are rewriting assessment rules, ministries are piloting AI tutors in local languages, and edtech companies are collecting data on millions of children. AI could help close learning gaps where teachers are scarce. It could also widen inequality, undermine assessment, expose children’s data and leave teachers behind. This course trains education leaders and professionals to govern AI so that it serves learners.

Who it’s for

Ministry of education officials, school and university leaders, quality assurance and examinations bodies, teacher educators, ICT and data protection leads in education, academic integrity officers, edtech procurement teams, curriculum developers, donor and NGO education programme staff, and education regulators. No technical background is needed.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Explain how AI used in education works and fails.
  • Map AI across African education systems, from early grades to universities.
  • Apply ethics, equity and learners’ rights, including children’s rights.
  • Identify the laws, policies and international guidance that apply.
  • Design AI governance for a school system, college or university.
  • Protect student data and keep children safe.
  • Judge whether AI tutors and learning tools actually improve learning.
  • Redesign assessment and integrity policies for generative AI.
  • Prepare teachers, support local languages, procure edtech responsibly, and bring shadow AI under control.
  • Monitor, evaluate and assure AI in education.

How it works

Twelve modules, about 45 hours, at your own pace. Short readings and interactive practice set in fictional schools, universities and ministries.

Assessment: module quizzes, four applied assignments marked against a published rubric, a timed final exam, and a capstone in which you design AI governance for a fictional national education system or university.

Certificate

Complete every step to earn the Certificate in AI Governance for Education, a verifiable digital certificate and Open Badge, showing your capstone result.
