Africa contributes a small share of global greenhouse gas emissions but faces some of the most severe impacts of climate change: droughts, floods, heat and threats to food and water. AI is being promoted as a tool for climate action: forecasting floods, guiding farmers, optimising energy grids and tracking forests. At the same time, AI itself uses energy, water and minerals, and climate AI projects can widen inequality or be used for greenwashing. This course gives professionals an ethical, rights-based approach to AI and climate, centred on African priorities and climate justice.

Who it’s for

Officials in environment, climate, agriculture, water, energy and disaster management; climate and development NGOs; researchers; sustainability, ESG and investment professionals; meteorological and disaster agencies; start-ups and technology companies; journalists; and donors. No technical background is needed.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Explain how AI can support climate adaptation and mitigation, and how it fails.
  • Apply climate justice, ethics and human rights to climate AI.
  • Navigate the laws, policies and international frameworks that apply.
  • Assess AI for early warning, agriculture, water, energy and transport.
  • Understand and reduce AI’s own environmental footprint.
  • Scrutinise climate data, measurement and claims, and spot greenwashing.
  • Govern climate AI projects, partnerships and data responsibly.
  • Monitor, evaluate and hold climate AI accountable.

How it works

Twelve modules, about 45 hours, at your own pace. Short readings and interactive practice set in fictional African countries and projects.

Assessment: module quizzes, four applied assignments, a timed final exam, and a capstone ethical and impact assessment of a climate AI initiative.

Certificate

Complete every step to earn the Certificate in AI Ethics and Climate, a verifiable digital certificate and Open Badge, showing your capstone result.

Certificate and badge

Completed twelve modules covering AI and climate foundations, climate change in Africa, ethics and climate justice, law and policy, AI for adaptation and early warning, agriculture, water and food security, mitigation, AI's environmental footprint, climate data and greenwashing, governance of climate AI projects, and monitoring and accountability; passed every module quiz, four rubric-marked applied assignments and a timed final exam; and completed an assessor-marked capstone.
